Tenn. creates quitline to assist pregnant smokers

Associated Press - May 18, 2009 6:35 PM ET

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee health officials have created a hot line to help pregnant women stop smoking.

The Department of Health Commissioner Susan R. Cooper said Monday that talking with a health care provider is the first step for pregnant women having difficulty quitting tobacco use.

Tennesseans can call the Tennessee Tobacco QuitLine free of charge at 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

Nearly 20% of Tennessee women who gave birth in 2007 indicated that they had smoked at some point during their pregnancy, according to the Department of Health's Division of Health Statistics.

Hancock County had the highest rate at 47.7%. The county with the lowest percentage was Williamson County with 5.6, according to a news release.
