MERIGOLD, Miss. (AP) - Donald Gant of Merigold has been named the 2009 Swisher Sweet/Sunbelt Expo Mississippi Farmer of the Year.
Gant now joins winners from nine other states competing for the Southeastern Farmer of the Year.
Owner of a family business, Gant has grown his operations over the last 39 years into 1 of the premier farms in Bolivar County.
Gant's operation includes 2,127 acres of rented land and 4,065 acres of owned land. He has developed a strong record for overall production and yields, with 1,000 acres of rice, 960 acres of corn, 3,200 acres of soybeans and 1,122 acres of wheat.
He also owns and maintains 329 acres of forested land.
