MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - At least two confirmed tornadoes ripped through heavily-populated areas of the Mid-South Thursday evening.
One confirmed tornado, 250 yards wide with winds reaching 80 to 90 miles an hour, touched down in the busy Wolfchase shopping area.
It caused an 18-wheeler to flip onto its side, and blew away one-third of a Kohl's store and the entire front of a bank.
Parking lots were left littered with broken glass and other debris.
In the nearby Rock Creek Parkway residential area, strong winds damaged cars and homes and uprooted trees.
A second, even larger tornado touched down in nearby Olive Branch, Mississippi, where it ripped off roofs in the Bethel Park subdivision.
Altogether, 50 homes were damaged and 8 were destroyed in the Northern Mississippi city.
A shelter for storm victims has been set up at Longview Heights Baptist Church on Goodman Road.
Flooding was reported outside city hall in downtown Memphis, where Mayor Willie Herenton held a reception to mark his final day in office.
While thousands of Mid-Southerners lost power, trees toppled and multiple car accidents were reported, no one was seriously injured in Thursday's storms.
Due to the weather, a Toby Keith and Trace Adkins concert scheduled for Snowden Grove in Southaven has been postponed until September 16.
