Senatobia slammed by strong storms

SENATOBIA, MS (WMC-TV) - As strong storms moved across the Mid-South late Friday morning, damage was quickly reported by residents in Senatobia, Mississippi.

By early Friday afternoon, high winds and rain were replaced by the sounds of clean-up crews and chainsaws, as residents surveyed damage left behind by the strong storms.

Homeowner Cody Cook said the wind whipped around for nearly an hour.

"We suddenly heard a crash, and I initially thought it was going to be the transformer," Cook said.

Instead, Cook found that a massive pine tree in his yard had toppled and managed to become tangled in web of phone, cable, and electrical wires.  The wind also brought down a nearby utility pole, and ripped a piece of latticework off the family's pool.

Around the corner from Cook's house, another giant tree was snapped to bits, leaving a giant mess.

Across town, resident Philander Rose found a similar situation.  Rose and his work crew dismantled a large tree that had fallen, but not before trying to determine how old it was.

"I counted around 98 to 100 growth rings," he said.

Rose estimated that nearly a century of life had dropped the ground in seconds during a storm that many felt could have been worse.

"If it would've gone the other direction it would've been straight in there house," Cook said.

No one was hurt during this storm, and there were no immediate reports of any damaged homes.
