MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis police cruiser was involved in a bizarre four-car crash on I-40 near Whitten Road.
Just after 2:00 a.m. Saturday, the driver of an SUV lost control of his vehicle and ran into a ditch.
As police worked to lift the SUV out of the mud, the driver of an Altima struck a squad car and sent it flying. The cruiser struck the SUV and a tow truck.
"You're talking about a 3,000 pound vehicle that was struck from behind at a minimum speed of 55 miles per hour," said MPD Lt. Mark McClain. "So, it did launch the vehicle forward, causing it to spin and striking the SUV and the wrecker. As you can see, the squad car landed on it's driver side. Fortunately the officer was not inside the vehicle."
No officers at the scene were injured, but two injured drivers were transported to area hospitals in non-critical condition.
Police ticketed the SUV's driver with failure to maintain proper control. The driver of the Altima was cited for failure to maintain a safe lookout.
This investigation is ongoing.
