HORN LAKE, MS (WMC-TV) - Two Horn Lake High School students are recovering after a car crash sent them to the hospital with serious injuries earlier this month.

The accident happened November 6 at the intersection of Goodman and Dubbarton in Horn Lake. Kelsi Herring, 15, and a friend were heading to school at the time. Her mother, Marci Herring, was taking her younger children to school and witnessed the accident.

"We were in the turn lane and realized it was Kelsi crossing with her friend, and I can't even come to explain - it's a mother's worse nightmare," Marci Herring said.

The students were turning left when they were hit by a truck, whose driver apparently did not see them. Herring said they were thrown nearly 80 feet from their vehicle.  Herring's daughter was airlifted to The Med with two collapsed lungs and two broken vertebrae in her neck.

"She broke her pelvis which had to be reconstructed," Marci Herring said. "She broke her leg and five ribs."

Recovery will be long for the Horn Lake High School ninth grader and dance team member, but the outpouring of prayers and support from friends and classmates have strengthened her resolve.

Her mother is now on a mission to keep others safe.

"I would like to see a light put there," Marci Herring said. "If not a light a blinking light, a caution light, anything. They've got to go something."

An account has been set up at the Trustmart Bank on Hurt Road to help pay for Kelsi's medical expenses.
