MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The hottest toy of the holiday season isn't an expensive video game or other costly electronic device. It's a small, battery operated hamster known as the "Zhu Zhu Pet."
Five different Zhu Zhu Pet characters are available - if you can find them - for a retail price of $7.99.
At the Target near Wolfchase, the toy isles were packed Tuesday, except for an empty spot reserved for the small, battery operated hamsters. Meanwhile, Toys 'R Us was out of stock until Friday, at which time the store expects to sell out again within an hour - even with a sign limiting buyers to one Zhu Zhu Pet per family, per day.
Some local stores are reporting daily phone calls from parents, asking if new shipments of the toy have come in. However, the toys are available, for the right price.
On the internet auction website EBay, opportunistic sellers are offering the toys at drastic prices, sometimes more than $40 each. Action News 5 found similar prices while searching third party retailers on Amazon.com.
Without a willingness to spend online, or a little luck in the store, the only place you may see these toys this holiday season is in commercials.
