Associated Press - January 23, 2010 2:45 PM ET

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee Tech University hopes to improve its retention rate by 8 to 10 percent within about five years.

School officials say the figure has been at 72 percent for several years. The retention and graduation rates are already among the highest of Tennessee Board of Regents 4-year schools.

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jack Armistead told the Cookeville Herald-Citizen that several new and redesigned retention efforts are being used.

They include:

Revamping the first floor of the Angelo and Jennette Volpe Library to create a learning commons.

Creating learning villages in residence halls.

Tweaking the University 1020 (First Year Connections) course to meet student needs better.
