HORN LAKE, MS (WMC-TV) - Weather watchers wanting to be more involved will get their chance when Horn Lake, Mississippi hosts a free storm spotter class.

The National Weather Service SKYWARN weather class is designed to make people more aware about the potential dangers of storms.

Emergency Management Agency Director Tommy Bledsoe said he hopes people will understand the threat of storms.

"You go out and 50 percent of the people wouldn't know what to do," Bledsoe said.  "If the siren goes off, they just take it for granted and just keep on going."

The class will also include information about what to look for in a storm, including how to recognize cloud formations.

Bettie Pruitt said she plans to attend the class and thinks it might help to calm her fears when it storms.

"I'd like to learn what to look for," Pruitt said.  "Give me as much advance notice as I can."

Bledsoe, who has been in the emergency management field for nearly 40 years, said the concept of the class boils down to one word.

"They will remember what you tell them in this class because it's protection," Bledsoe said.  "If you protect somebody they will remember it."
