(WMC-TV) - A Memphis man was in court Wednesday for allegedly impersonating an attorney.
Behind closed doors in General Sessions courtroom 13 Wednesday morning, paralegal Myron Bass appeared for a video arraignment. The specific details of his case are not showing up in the Shelby County District Attorney's Office, Shelby County Sheriff's Office or Memphis Police. But the TBI is investigating, and Bass is charged with two counts of impersonating a licensed professional and two counts of unlawful practice of law.
Though law professor Steve Mulroy has no link to this case, he says Bass' actions could have major repercussions.
"He's clearly in trouble," Mulroy said Wednesday.
Paralegals do research on cases, but they're not allowed to actually give legal advice or present cases in court.
"He's obviously in criminal trouble, because it's criminal fraud to do that, and also possibly a civil liability as well," Mulroy said.
Meaning, this fake lawyer's so-called clients could sue if the judge decides to throw out their cases.
"I think the judge would have the authority on a case-by-case basis to invalidate the cases and start over," Mulroy said.
Bass shows up as a member of The Paralegal Firm. But most of their phone numbers do not work and some are disconnected.
Bass listed work for several local law firms, and even the State of Tennessee.
"I'd like to find out did he represent his clients competently or not," Mulroy said.
The Tennessee Secretary of State and the Department of Commerce and Insurance both say The Paralegal Firm has never been registered with either agency.
Bass' next court date is May 28. He is being represented by the Bailey Law Firm.
