MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Hundreds of senior citizens received free legal advice Tuesday during a special clinic in Orange Mound. Volunteers with Memphis Area Legal Services held the special event at the Orange Mound Community Center.
"I'm here today about my wishes in the event of my death," attendee Billie Winding said.
Some seniors, like Winding, needed help making out a will, while others got advice on getting a power of attorney. Still others were interested in setting up an advanced care plan - a document that spells out exactly what they would want doctors and relatives to do if they were unable to make those decisions for themselves.
"To make sure that you save your family from some of the very difficult heart wrenching situations that can occur when you don't take care of your business properly," said Linda Seely of Memphis Area Legal Services.
Attorneys with legal aid teamed up with attorneys from AutoZone and Bass, Berry and Sims.
"It's very important that seniors understand that they have rights that can be preserved so long as those rights are communicated, and their desires are made known to their loved ones to preserve their quality of life," attorney Kristen Wright said.
College students majoring in law also offered help.
Tuesday's event was the second free legal clinic held for seniors. Winding hoped there would be more.
"I think its very good, because a lot of people can't afford it, you know? And if they can give it for free, that's a very good idea," Winding said.
