Shelby County man killed after scuffle outside his home

CORDOVA, TN -

CORDOVA, TN (WMC-TV) - One person was killed Tuesday morning in a shooting outside a home in the 9100 block of Afton Grove Road.

Authorities said the incident happened around 4:30 a.m., as the victim, identified as 51-year-old Frederick Matting, arrived home from work.

Matting was apparently confronted by an unknown assailant, and the two began to fight.  During the scuffle, Matting was shot multiple times.

"I two big pops of gunfire that didn't sound like a regular gun," a neighbor said. "It was just loud, like it was inside your room."

Matting tried to run away, but later collapsed not far from his home.  He died a short time later.

Once the investigation began, neighbors were put on lockdown- unable to leave their homes for more than five hours.

A neighbor who called 911 didn't want to be identified, but said what happened was surreal.

"I sure hope it's not random," the neighbor said. "This just put me in a discomfort in my home."

Late Tuesday afternoon, deputies were still searching for a suspect in the shooting, but had not released a description of that person.

The suspect's motive was also unclear.
