OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC-TV) - A close friend is mourning the loss of 33-year-old China Jones, after she was murdered over the weekend.

Nicole Newman played basketball with Jones in high school.

"It was something about those days being at Hamilton," said Newman on Monday. "We were all a family."

According to Newman, it was on that team when they became close. Now, it is hard for her to believe that her cousin and former teammate is gone.

"You reach out and can touch this person on yesterday, and today they're gone," said Newman. "It's a shocking feeling."

Saturday morning, Olive Branch police were dispatched to Pecan View Drive, where officers found 32-year-old Jelani Greene walking down the street naked. Police took Greene to his home, where they found Jones dead.

"It was shocking," said Newman.

The Olive Branch Police Department charged Greene with murder. But Newman doesn't know of Greene, or his relationship to Jones.

"This is a puzzle," she said. "This part of it is a total puzzle to me."

Jones, a mother of two, was a dealer at Horseshoe Casino in Tunica. Newman said she will miss her deeply.

"She had an outgoing spirit," said Newman. "I'm talking about an open heart. She was just a good person. She was almost like an angel.

Newman said, even in her death, Jones is bringing people together.

"Its just amazing that one person can bring the whole community, not just the class of 95, but the whole community together. It's amazing," said Newman. "She left that kind of legacy."

Jelani Greene is set to be in court Tuesday in DeSoto County.
