BROWNSVILLE, TN (WMC-TV) - Haywood High School coach Chandra Franks spent the weekend in jail after the Brownsville Police Department charged her with sexual battery by an authority figure.

Students said Franks was not at school Thursday or Friday.

"It's just shocking," said Haywood High School student R.J. Perkins.

Franks is a softball coach, cross country coach and a gym teacher at Haywood High School.

The Brownsville Police Department asked for the public's help to find Franks Saturday afternoon.  Two hours later, she turned herself in.

"My freshman year, I was the manager of the softball team, helping out, and she seemed like a really cool lady," said Perkins.

Investigators said the victim is a teenager at Haywood High School.  They would not say if the alleged incident happened on campus.  They also would not reveal the gender or exact age of the victim.

According to Tennessee law, sexual battery by an authority figure can be unlawful sexual contact with a victim who is between 13 and 17 years old committed by a person in a position of trust, with supervisory or disciplinary power over the victim, and the perpetrator used that position of trust or power to accomplish the sexual contact.

Haywood High School parents said they are concerned.

"Why?" asked parent Tina Shaw.  "Why would she do this?"

In college, Franks was a softball starter for Union University.  She was a TranSouth Conference Player of the Year and an NCCAA All-American in 1999.  She still holds the Lady Bulldog school record for most runs batted in.

Franks is scheduled to be arraigned on the charge Monday morning.

Sunday evening, Haywood County Schools' superintendent released a statement which said, in part, "Brownsville Police Department officials advised Superintendent (Marlon) King that it had been reported that Ms. Franks had loaned her car to an unlicensed student. Actions were taken immediately to suspend Ms. Franks for violating School Board Policy."

"Based on the most recent allegations and charges of sexual battery, Superintendent King has initiated an internal investigation plan."
