The school day ended normally Friday at Overton High. But it certainly did not begin that way.
"I think it's really sad," says one parent.
Memphis Police say an armed man carjacked a woman who was here to check-out her child from school. He cased their car, then forced them out at gunpoint before speeding away. Jackie Adair's daughter told her about it.
"She told me that a parent was carjacked this morning right in front of the school," says Adair.
This was the fourth carjacking on or near school property since October 10th. School district employees were the victims the first three times at Kingsbury High, Treadwell High, and Bruce Elementary. Now, parent are on alert.
"And it's just bad you can't even come up here and be safe to check on your child," says parent Lisa Love.
It concerns parent Judy Totten.
"Cause it could happen to me," she says.
She thinks more police should be on patrol during the mornings and afternoons. A district spokesperson says "security staff will continue to work with Memphis Police to provide ample security measures on and around our school grounds." Many parents know their safety can't be guaranteed.
"These days and times, there are no safe areas," says Jackie Adair. "Only thing you can do is pray," she adds.
She says she'll be doing a lot more of that.
The man behind this latest carjacking remains on the run. Police do not believe he is responsible for any of the other school carjackings. The stolen car is a beige 1994 Mazda 929 with Georgia drive out tags. Call CrimeStoppers at 528-CASH with any information.
