MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Academy Award winner Louis Gossett Jr. is in Memphis filming a movie. Gossett appears in "The Grace Card," which began production last week and will be shot entirely in the city.
Gossett plays George Wright, a civil rights pioneer and experienced pastor who provides wisdom and advice to his son, Sam Wright, played by local actor Michael Higgenbottom. Sam Wright counsels a fellow police officer during a racially charged series of events.
Over the years Gossett's skill as an actor encouraged Hollywood to give opportunities to a number of African-American actors. Now, he's turning his attention to helping young people move away from crime and violence.
"The buck stops here," he said in an interview Thursday. "That's our responsibility. You don't have to ask the government to do that."
Gossett has started a agency called the "Eracism Foundation," which teaches children to respect others and themselves.
The actor said it just may turn out to be his greatest role.
"I just wanted to be remembered for doing the best that I could," he said.
"The Grace Card," which is set in Memphis, is scheduled to be released next year.
