HARDEMAN COUNTY, TN (WMC-TV) - A Hardeman County man is under arrest for murder after confessing the crime to his wife.

Neighbors say the arrest of 50-year-old Rickie Sipes is so shocking, it's left many in Hardeman County speechless.  Sipes is charged with first degree murder and tampering with evidence in connection with the death of Anita Flatt.

Flatt, 51, was found murdered in her home on Naylor Road in Toone last September.

"They were friends," TBI spokesperson John Mehr said. "They've known each other in the past.  They were acquaintances."

Flatt's mother found her body and notified the police.

"All kinds of things happen in homicides," Mehr said. "We felt that it was gonna be somebody pretty close by."

According to the TBI, a tip led investigators to Sipes.  Investigators said Sipes told his wife he committed the crime.  She later reported his confession to law enforcement.

"He was later confronted, and then enough evidence was revealed against him," Mehr said. "We were able to charge him with the homicide."

None of Flatt's family members wanted to comment on the arrest Monday.
