Former Memphis officer sentenced for stealing

Posted: Updated:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A former Memphis police officer has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for stealing money from Hispanic motorists while on duty.

Judge S. Thomas Anderson sentenced Carlton Moore to 27 months in prison and one year of supervised release.

Moore had pleaded guilty in June to stealing cash from three Hispanic drivers he pulled over while on duty as a Memphis police officer in March 2008 and May 2009.

During these stops, prosecutors said, Moore ordered the victims out of their vehicles, patted them down and removed personal items from them during the search. He then stole money from the victims before returning their personal items and releasing them.

Moore faced more than three years in prison. His sentence was announced Wednesday by the Department of Justice.
