MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Thousands of runners filled the streets of Memphis Saturday for the 8th Annual St. Jude Memphis Marathon.
The chilly temperatures didn't keep participants from pounding the pavement to raise money for the children's hospital.
Runner Karl Kaufman said his goal is to make a difference in the lives of children who are fighting cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
"The way that we ran through the St. Jude campus, and to see those kids out there wearing their masks, and people that don't have their hair because of chemo. You know, our little aches and pains don't mean anything when we know what they've gone through," he said.
Jynocel Basweti of Santa Fe, New Mexico, was the top male finisher with a time of 2:16:21.
Salome Kosgei of Sleepy Hollow, New York, was the top female finisher with a time of 2:43:42.
Other winners included Caroline Blatti of Memphis, the top half marathon female finisher with a time of 1:25:17, and Matthew Albertson of Clayton, Mo., who finished the half marathon with a time of 1:13:12.
Altogether, 15,500 people participated in the races, which included a marathon, half marathon and Memphis Grizzlies House 5K. And nearly 100 families participated in the new St. Jude Memphis Family Race, completing a one-mile fun walk.
The weekend's events are expected to have raised $2.5 million for the hospital.
