FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Fayetteville police say an officer who shot and killed a would-be bank robber followed department policy.
Det. David Williams shot and killed Matthew Andersen of Elkins outside an Arvest Bank last Wednesday as Andersen tried to drive away after trying to rob the bank at a drive-through window. Police say when officers responding to the bank alarm blocked Andersen's car he rammed into a car behind him and Williams fired three shots.
A statement from police say Williams opened fire because of Andersen's "reckless actions" and apparent lack of regard for the safety of others.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office is conducting a separate investigation. Capt. Dallas McClellan says a report won't be ready for at least a week.
