TRACY CITY, Tenn. (AP) - A dead man has been elected mayor in Tracy City, Tenn.
Carl Robin Geary received 268 votes Tuesday to 85 for incumbent Barbara Brock in the non-partisan, two-candidate race.
Donna Basham, administrator of the Grundy County Election Commission, said Wednesday that the city council will now have to appoint a mayor. The term is four years.
She said Geary died suddenly a few weeks ago. She would not speculate about why he won but said his death was widely reported at the time in newspapers in the small southeastern Tennessee town.
Brock, a former office manager for a jewelry company, had been appointed mayor 16 months ago when the then-mayor died.
She said Wednesday she felt she had done a good job but voters wanted a return to the past. All three town aldermen also lost.
"I've been told by many people that I've done more for this town than any mayor in many years," she said. "But people do not want to see the town flourish and don't want law and order, and we were doing both."
