Guns on campus at two Memphis high schools Wednesday

Two high schools in Memphis - Manassas and Fairley - found themselves linked together Wednesday when a handgun was discovered on each school's campus.

At Manassas, a 15-year-old student took a weapon to class he wanted to sell.  The accidentally fired, striking a friend in the arm.

Moments later at Fairley,  20-year-old Eddie Smith arrived on campus in an attempt to confront a 17-year-old female student there.  Memphis Police Lt. Joe Scott said a school resource officer was tipped that Smith might be a threat

"The resource officer confronted Mr. Smith," Scott said.  "There was an altercation, physical. During this altercation, the resource officer was hurt, but he was able to take Mr. Smith into custody."

Neither the Manassas student or Fairley's school resource officer were seriously injured .  Still, Scott said, the incidents sound the alarm of safety and security on campus.

"A kid with a gun is a recipe for disaster, and we need to as adults make sure if we have information about that, take action," Scott said.

Officials said one solution to Wednesday's problems are metal detectors...all Memphis high schools have them, but their not used everyday.  School leaders insisted they would be used Thursday morning.

The Manassas student police say brought a gun to school is expected to appear in court Thursday.  Eddie Smith is also expected to appear in court to answer charges.
