Forest group upset at Memphis Zoo for removing trees

Updated:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Forest advocates are upset that the Memphis Zoo has uprooted 139 trees to build a $13.5 million exhibit.

Park Friends Inc. said it didn't realize the magnitude of the project and the amount of trees taken.

The group has posted a sign outside the construction of the Teton Trek exhibit that read, "Who will speak for the trees?"

Zoo president Chuck Brady says he is surprised forest advocates are mad because the expansion has been part the master plan for years.

The exhibit is scheduled to open in March 2009 and will include Grizzly bears, elk and gray wolves.

The construction is part of a $96 million, 25-year overhaul of the zoo.
