Andy's Restaurant Scorecard: Best in West Memphis, AR, plus scores as of 3/8/09

Updated:

The Crittenden County, AR, Department of Health doesn't dish out scores or letter grades in its restaurant health inspections.

It just lists violations.

The three Crittenden County restaurants inspected this week are all on Martin Luther King Blvd. off Interstate 40 -- and they all did OK.

The KFC/Taco Bell racked up just two violations, according to its health inspection report.  The inspector cited a dirty "bottom of cookie holder; sides and edges of equipment" and a dirty "floor around cooking equipment (and) ice machine."

The manager politely declined to comment.

The Pilot/Subway next door ended up with just one violation with its ice machine:  "some mold on deflector/need to clean & sanitize per manual."

I stopped by the Pilot/Subway to talk to manager Jeff Anderson.  His staff said he had gone to another store, and he'd be back later.  When I called three times later that afternoon, the phone would just ring and ring.

No big deal.  Just wanted to give Jeff a chance to jaw-bone about his inspection.

Even better, the Petro's convenience store and Iron Skillet restaurant across the street had zero violations.  Nice job, truck stop!

THIS WEEK'S BIG TIP:  P's & Q BBQ, 510 N Missouri St, West Memphis, ARý (870) 735-9394ý

Our Restaurant Scorecard viewers voted 6 to 1 for P's & Q as the Best Place To Eat in West Memphis, AR.  They raved about Debbie Pelt's ribs, pork sandwiches and her personal brand of service and attention.

"They get to know the customers, and you become part of their family," says Rose Kull.  Kull drives from Cordova, TN, just to eat at P's & Q.

"I do come here every once in a while when I'm craving a good pork BBQ sandwich!" exclaims Father Greg Luyet of St. Michael's Catholic Church in West Memphis.

Unfortunately, Father Luyet gave up restaurant dining for Lent.  He'll really be craving one of Pelt's pork sandwiches!

WHAT ANDY LIKES:  The $4.80 lunch special (BBQ Pork Sandwich, coleslaw [homemade!], baked beans and fries), RIBS!!!!!!
