Ask Andy: Cyber Monday...and beyond!

MEMPHIS (WMC TV) - For the lowest prices online during Cyber Monday -- or any day for that matter -- it's not WHERE you shop online.

It's HOW you shop online.

I've got a four-step process that virtually guarantees me the lowest price on any product I shop online.  It has worked for me many times.  Here it is:

* SHOP PRICE COMPARSION SITES FIRST.  If you have a product in mind, hold off on the store sites for a minute.  Instead, go to either www.mysimon.com or www.dealpilot.com.  Plug in the product, and those sites will instantly browse every online retailer who sells the product.  You'll get a page that lists the retailers and each of their prices for that product -- a one-stop price comparison shop!

* SHOP STORE SITE, THEN 'FREEZE.'  Pick the lowest price, then go to the site of the store with that price.  When you get to the page that has your product with that low price (usually the page where you would add the product to your 'shopping cart'), freeze right there!

* COPY THE WEB ADDRESS (URL).  Move your cursor to the web address box on that page.  Highlight and copy the web address that is in the box.  Copy the whole thing, no matter how long it is.

* GO TO PRICEPROTECTR.COM.  Notice the funny spelling. Make sure you type it correctly.  Now paste the product's web address in the box on www.priceprotectr.com.  Add your e-mail address, and priceprotectr.com will automatically update you when the price drops on that item!

Last year, I went to priceprotectr.com when I found the lowest price for a Dell Inspiron laptop on Best Buy's site. I found one with all the bells and whistles for $616.99.

On the page where you add it to your shopping cart, I cut and pasted the web address to the box on priceprotectr.com.

A week and two days later, priceprotectr.com sent me an e-mail that Best Buy has dropped the price on that computer to $599.99.

I clicked a link, called a number, and BOOM:  I got $17 back in a lowest price guarantee.

All because I used priceprotectr.com.

No matter what e-tailer you shop, always make sure the site is secure at the point where you enter your credit card information.  You should see "https" in the address bar (the URL) on that page.  If there is no "s" after the "http," do NOT continue your purchase.

Good luck!  Please feel free to let me know if this process works (or doesn't work) for your online shopping, either in the comment thread below or at awise@wmctv.com.
