OXFORD, MS (WMC TV) - Since no restaurants failed this week, the Scorecard took a road trip to Rebel Land for this week's Big Tip!

THIS WEEK'S BIG TIP:  Phillips Grocery, 2406 S. Lamar Blvd., Oxford, MS, 662-236-5951

A killer burger recipe, plus the rich history of a family cabin converted into a popular eatery, convinced our viewers to vote Phillips Grocery the Best Place to Eat in Oxford, MS.

"They pat out their own meat, and I like that," said Ann Garland Russell, who'll get in her car and drive all the way from Clarksdale, MS, to chomp on a Phillips burger. "I like the onions, too!"

Owner Emmie Lou Harlan Greene used to eat burgers at the original Phillips Grocery in Holly Springs, MS, where she taught school. She loved the burgers so much, she scored the rights to the recipe when she retired 15 years ago.

She carried that recipe, an obsession with Elvis Presley and her knack for country decor to the Oxford cabin her father built for her when she was a student at Ole Miss. 15 years later, the success of her Oxford Phillips Grocery has guaranteed that her retirement is an early one.

Maybe too early.

"15 years, and we've just had more business every year since the year we opened," said Harlan Greene. "And now it looks like I'll never retire!"

That's just fine to the Ole Miss faithful who fill the cabin for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

"When you're in here, you feel like you're in old Mississippi," said Ole Miss senior Luci Bueter of Gainesville, GA.

"It makes me feel at home," said Garland Russell.  "It reminds me of my grandparents' house. It's got the big, wide front porch, and it's one story, and it's kind of country-looking."

The country atmosphere and special-recipe burgers aren't the only draws.  Chicken baskets, shrimp and steak (dinner menu only!), fried pies, caramel and strawberry cakes have everyone with empty stomachs driving a little further south of the courthouse and the campus.
