MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis man has been charged with first degree murder in the death of his girlfriend's two-year-old daughter.

Officials said the incident happened late Friday afternoon while Calvin Jones, 23, was watching his girlfriend's children.

According to the affidavit of complaint, Jones is accused of beating the 2-year-old girl, identified as Saniiyah Kuykendall, with "a basketball shoe" as punishment because she defecated on a floor.

Kuykendall later died from her injuries.

Also jailed was Kuykendall's mother, Anisha Alford, on charges of aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect.

Police say, once home, Alford knew that Saniiyah was spitting up, cold to the touch, and complaining of being sick the rest of the night.  A witness visiting the apartment noticed the same, and that Saniiyah's eyes were rolling back in her head, her eyelids fluttering.

The visitor told Alford that Saniiyah needed to go to the emergency room, but according to the affidavit of complaint, Jones and Alford, "decided against seeking medical attention and went to sleep for the evening."

By Saturday evening, Saniiyah Kuykendall had died in her bedroom.

Tuesday, Jones was being held in jail without bond.  Alford, meanwhile, was still being held on $7,500 bond.
