WEST MEMPHIS, AR (WMC-TV) - Residents of West Memphis reacted in shock Friday to the Thursday deaths of two city police officers, and the shootout that followed in a Walmart parking lot.
Even though on the surface things were returning to normal, the scars of what happened will linger for quite sometime to come.
At the West Memphis Police Station, as officers reported to work, flags flew at half-staff in salute of those lost their lives in the line of duty.
Walmart employee Ashley Hollingsworth said she was on her way to work when the shootings happened.
"I'm still pretty shaken up, and I have to work today, and I'm kind of skiddish about going into work 'cause it could happen anytime," she said.
Hollingsworth, a door greeter, said her primary concern was the safety of her co-workers and customers. Down the road at Cornerstone Baptist Church, a memorial of American flags stood as a memorial.
Associate Pastor John Phillips was at the church as events unfolded.
"The atmosphere around here is like a cloud of shock was hanging around," he said. "Everybody was just scared, nobody knew what to do. We didn't know whether to come outside or stay inside."
As West Memphis residents begin questioning what and why the shootings happened. Phillips said there is one place to turn.
"The main thing is to lean on the Lord in situations like this," he said. "Everyone of us asks why did it happen here in West Memphis, Arkansas, but those are questions we can't answer."
Action News 5 has set up a fund for the law enforcement officers injured or killed in today's shootouts. You can make a contribution to the "Fallen Officers of West Memphis" fund at any Suntrust Bank location.
