WEST MEMPHIS, AR (WMC-TV) - Jerry and Joe Kane, who are suspected of murdering two West Memphis police officers Thursday, are now believed to have stopped at a nearby apartment complex before a shootout in a Walmart parking lot.

A witness, who asked not to be identified, said she saw the suspects and knew something was not right.

"He was very nervous, he looked scared," she said.  "He never took his eyes from our direction."

The witness said Joe Kane, Jerry Kane's 16-year-old son, had a distinctive look just moments before the shootout that would take his life.

"I don't know what that was, the look he had," she said.  "Like, I just killed somebody, but he had a look on him that he was stressed and worried and scared."

The witness said the Kanes pulled into her apartment complex near the Walmart where the shootout occurred.

"They very well could have opened fire on us," she said.

She said as she saw the van leave, she noticed it did not have a license plate.  She said she then immediately called police.

As she hung up the phone with police, she heard sirens heading into Walmart, then gunfire.

"I heard what sounded like firecrackers," she said.

She said she was thankful she was at the right place at the right time and was able to tell police where the suspects were going.

"I can't imagine the pain," she said, "because if I lost my children, I would be devastated."
