MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A new program, promising to help Memphis City School teachers overcome drastic budget cuts, was unveiled Tuesday.
Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash was on hand as officials introduced the ActivClassroom, a technology-enabled education experience that will soon become part of classroom instruction in Memphis City Schools.
"If we don't start utilizing and adapting active technology for learning purposes, then we're way behind the learning curve," Cash said.
Roughly 20 to 25 classrooms in the district are currently using the innovative system, along with interactive tools that help students learn. The educational suite includes tools like a large screen that features 3-D imaging, audio, and video.
"Normally they don't allow texting in the classroom," student Christopher Boyd said. "Now, with this program, you can use a handheld device to text answers to your computer, and it'll come up on the screen."
"Instead of reading out of a book, you can move and click on different things," student Britney Giles added.
Cash said while obstacles face Memphis City Schools, innovative tools can help educators overcome those challenges by helping to accelerate student achievement.
The ActivClassroom costs approximately $2,700 per classroom.
