MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Outdoor activities continued across the Mid-South despite the sweltering temperatures Saturday.

The scorching heat outdoors did not get in the way of the 14th Annual Gibson 5K benefiting St. Patrick Learning Center.  An estimated 2,000 people turned out for the race, which kicked off at Beale and Second Street.

Runners like Cathy Burk and Christy Prose did what they could to brave the heat.

"It does not bother me personally," Burk said.  "I'm from Houston, Texas, so humidity is what I grew up running in.  I've been running my whole life."

"If you're not accustomed to it, people can pass out and have a lot of problems," Prose said, "so it's important that you stay hydrated."

Attendees at the St. Jude Classic Golf Tournament came prepared.

"I'm using my bottled water," Cheryl Sodini said.  "Brought my towel and they've given us a nice fan and there's a nice breeze blowing on out here."

"Make sure that you bring your towels with you to wipe the sweat," said Seth Lomack.  "Bring more than enough liquids to keep yourself hydrated."

Others kept cool by staying indoors.  Ridgeway High School was the spot for the 3rd Annual Heal the Hood All-Star Basketball Game.

Event coordinator LaDell Beamon said the game is aimed at putting an end to violence.

"When you look at ... how hot it is outside, it's encouragement for everybody to actually come inside to a nice family atmosphere," Beamon said.  "That's what we're doing here today."
