MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Mid-South man motivated by Monday's heat-related death of a Memphis resident stepped up Wednesday to help others keep cool.

After the uncle of a close friend died from heat exposure in his Memphis home Monday, Edward Hampton went into action.

"When I saw it on the news, I decided to do something for the aging and the elderly," Hampton said.

Hampton and his wife knew they wanted to donate fans in 70-year-old Sonny Murray's memory, but they didn't want to get scammed.  So they turned to Action News 5's Kym Clark through Facebook.

"She contacted me right back and gave me the number to call," Murray said.

Kym told the Hamptons that the Aging Commission's 'Fans for Seniors' program accepts fans and distributes them across the Mid-South.

"I know that it is my duty as a Christian to reach out to help the under-served," Hampton said.

Wednesday, Hampton visited a Mid-South Home Depot, where he loaded 20 fans onto his pick-up truck, and hauled them to the Aging Commission.

"It's wonderful when citizens step up and respond like this for us," the Aging Commission's Kathryn Coulter said. "The community is what drives the Fans for Seniors Program.  The program exists solely on community donations."

Hampton hoped his example would motivate others.

"I hope that this sparks one more person to reach out and to give," he said.

The Aging Commission accepts fans and monetary donations, drop-offs or mail, at 2670 Union Avenue Extension. They're open 8:00pm to 4:30pm, and can be reached at 901-324-6333.
