Summer is only a few days old, but it seems like a brutal beginning, with a relentless string of hot temperatures. This early heat wave has already caused deaths here in the Mid-South. In the face of adversity, comes a hero by the name of Edward Hampton.
Hampton and his wife this week donated 20 fans to the Aging Commission's "Fans for Seniors" program. They were motivated by the loss of their friend, 70-year-old Sonny Murray, who died of heat-related causes Monday. Hampton said he knew it was his duty as a Christian to reach out to help people who are less fortunate.
He also said that he hoped that his donation would spark others to do the same. In Shelby County, the Aging Commission accepts fans and monetary donations.
This fan program exists solely on community donations. If you want to help, or if you're 65 or older and need a fan, you can reach the Aging Commission at 901-324-6333. Other communities have similar programs, and they also have do-gooders like Edward Hampton. That's my turn. Now it's your turn.
