MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Over 80 percent of Memphis City School students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.  So what happens at meal time when those children are out of school?

A Memphis woman is using her ministry to step up and feed the city's poorest children when they are out of school.

Recently, Action News 5 followed Creative Life Bread Basket volunteers on their daily route in South Memphis.  Volunteers hand out 300 sack lunches each day during the summer months, a time when the city's poorest children are unable to get free breakfast and lunch from school.

Dr. Carolyn Bibbs, who runs the non-profit ministry, says it's tough to see what the kids are going through.

"We know a lot of times that when we take this lunch, this is the only meal for the day," she said.

Marilyn Murrell is happy to have help feeding her ten grandchildren.

"It helps me and the whole community, and everybody speaks well about it," Murrell said. "And the children say, 'Have we missed the lunch truck Miss Marilyn?' 'cause they know Miss Marilyn will be looking."

That type of gratitude keeps Carolyn Bibbs and her staff motivated.

"It gives us the energy to keep doing it, and hopefully doing even more, because our children need it," she said. "They do. Somebody needs to feed the poor."

By the end of the summer, Creative Life will have passed out more than 15,000 sack lunches.
