TUNICA, MS (WMC-TV) - The Tunica Humane Society is refuge to more than 100 dogs, all looking for a suitable home. Director Sandy Williams is looking to improve living conditions for the animals, but needs help from the public.

"We actually submitted an application to the Pepsi Project trying to buy a facility, so that we can provide an indoor shelter for our homeless animals," Williams said Thursday. "For the last two years, we have operated totally outdoors."

Because the shelter operates outdoors, the dogs there are exposed to weather year-round.  When Williams saw Pepsi was offering $50,000 in grant money, an idea was launched.

"It' funding millions of dollars in grants for ideas they feel would make a better world, so we felt like we fit that mold," she said.

In Pepsi's contest, the 10 ideas receiving the most online votes by the end of July receive $50,000. Williams said the money would help with the purchase of a large, indoor building for the dogs.

Williams said it takes between $5,000 to $6,000 a month for the care and upkeep of the animals.  She loves what she does, and hopes the community will support the effort.

"We're just hoping that people will understand what this would mean to our little shelter, and possibly vote for us everyday," she said.
