WALNUT, MS (WMC-TV) - Residents of Walnut aren't sure what to make of a strange animal that was recently killed at a local farm.

Tanya Guitron said rumors have been swirling about the animal.

"I heard that somebody shot an elephant-looking creature," she said.

Others said the animal could be a Chupacabra, a legendary vampire-like creature suspected of killing livestock and then sucking their blood.

Pictures of the animal, uploaded to My 5, look similar to ones captured in images from Mexico and Texas.

Kenneth Pulse, who raises goats near Walnut, believes he has encountered the creature.

"Two for three weeks ago, we buried a goat in the pasture - a full grown goat," he said.

The goat weighed about 70 pounds, but that didn't seem to matter.

"Something had dug it up and pulled it in the pasture, and had eaten most of it," he said.

A few days ago, the goat was buried for a second time.

"It's already been pulled out in the field and eaten," Pulse said.

Pulse remains prepared for whatever he might encounter.

"I take my gun when I go down there at night, and my dogs," he said.

But does the Chupacabra exist, or is it just an urban legend?

"No one has been able to prove it, but no one has been able to disprove it," said Herb Roberts, a curator at the Memphis Zoo.

Roberts could not say with certainty what the animal in the pictures was.

"I would identify it as a dog with a very, very bad case of the mange," he said.  "I want to believe that things exist that we haven't seen or discovered yet."
