One person died after two pit bulls got loose and attacked several people late Tuesday morning near Poplar and Manassas.More >>
Our hearts go out to the Parker family. William Parker died following a pit bull attack near his home Tuesday. His daughter fought the dogs valiantly in an attempt to save his life.
This tragic story brought to my mind a famous quote from the American writer, Pearl S. Buck: "Every great mistake has a halfway moment, a split second when it can be recalled and perhaps remedied."
Memphis Police had been called to the scene two days earlier, apparently in response to an attack on another neighbor. So, some people there are blaming the police. Additionally, some people were quoted the day of the attacks as saying they had been living in fear of these dogs for as long as a month.
By all accounts, the man who owned the dogs was not a responsible pet owner. Yet with all of these warning signs, nobody did what had to be done in order to prevent this terrible attack.
We all face these halfway moments that Pearl Buck mentioned from time to time. When you come face to face with yours, remember William Parker.
