MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis College of Art has artfully dodged the recession and raised millions for expansion.

The art school has outgrown its main campus in Overton Park and is truly taking back our neighborhoods not only in Midtown but Downtown as well.

The all new Fogelman Hall, twin to Metz Hall next door, will provide new housing for students of Memphis College of Art.

"We have over 22 properties in this neighborhood, primarily housing for students," Kim Williams said.

The new dorm building is a work of art in itself with three floors of housing and a naturally lit studio up top.

According to Jeff Emerson, a builder from Montgomery Martin Contractors, the dorm was built with the students in mind.

"...Nice open space for students to work on their art. Got a lot of light during the day and in the evening, this is a fabulous space as you drive by. It's almost a beacon for Midtown."

More classrooms are being added to Rust Hall, the main campus in Overton Park. Admissions and administrative offices are moving to freshly renovated space at Poplar and Tucker.

A brand new graduate school is also opening at 477 South Main in the old Lewis Supply building in the arts district near the Civil Rights Museum.

"It's five floors and we are doing the first three floors right now," Williams said. "There's a great contemporary gallery downstairs. Our graduate program is there. There's studios."

To make all this happen, Williams has quietly led a fundraising campaign that has raised nearly 75 percent of a $10 million goal.

"We feel that we're ready to announce the Design for the Future campaign and let everyone know that we've only got a little ways to go," Williams said.

To learn more about how you can help the Design for the Future campaign, you can call Kim Williams at Memphis College of Art or log on to the school's website linked to this story.
