SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - Action News 5 is sending out a High 5 to students preparing for a future in medicine.

This week, Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven is holding a unique training program, where 19 students get to see real procedures inside the hospital.

Students have the opportunity to watch everything from a hernia operation to a live birth. It's an inspiration to students working towards a career in the health care industry.

"My goal is to be able to see somebody in pain or sick to help and try and cure them," student participant Larry Brooks said.

"It is awesome," said Shari Barrett, an aspiring surgeon. "You get to see stuff that when they do reality shows you never get to."

Students must apply to take part in this unique program.  The approval process requires teacher recommendations, good grades, and an essay.
