MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis couple is no longer struggling to stay cool, thanks to the generosity of an Action News 5 viewer.
When Jessie Hearns, owner of Jessie B's BBQ and Soul Food, heard Wesley and Yahnora Harris' plea for help on Sunday, he knew he had to act quickly.
"After I saw the story, I couldn't sleep at all," Hearns said Monday. "I just had to do something."
Sunday night, Action News 5 introduced you to Wesley and Yahnora Harris. The retired couple, who lives on social security and operates a small church out of their home, has been living for months without an air conditioner.
The couple said their finances were hit hard after Wesley was carjacked and beaten a year ago. Facing high medical bills, the couple cannot afford to purchase an air conditioner.
"Sometimes it feels like you couldn't get your breath," Yahnora Harris said.
Looking for help, Wesley and Yahnora had their name put on Shelby County's waiting list for a free air conditioner, but so far, they haven't received one.
"We've been hoping we'd get hooked up on something that could help us, and we will, if we can last long enough," Wesley said.
Now, Hearns is coming to the couple's rescue.
"Since their house was so hot, I'm going to give them two air conditioners, and also I'm going to pay for dinner the rest of the week," he said. "They can come down to Jessie B's BBQ and Soul Food and eat for free."
Hearns is also encouraged other business owners in the community to step up.
"I'm challenging all the business owners to get together, and if you don't do nothing but buy one air conditioner unit, that will help somebody from sitting in their house and dying," he said.
If you want to donate an air conditioner or get put on the Shelby County Community Services Agency waiting list, you can call 901-545-4311 during normal business hours.
