MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A teenage girl who was struck by lightning while walking home from school in Southeast Shelby County was still in critical condition at LeBonheur Children's Hospital Wednesday.

While 17-year-old Tierney Bourage is being treated in the intensive care unit, loved ones hold prayer vigils on the hour.

"Tierney right now is in critical condition, but we believe a miracle is going to happen," said Dora Springer, Bourage's aunt.

The Southwind High School senior was walking home from her first day at school Monday when she was struck by lightning.  Parents of other students administered CPR until paramedics arrived.

"Even now it's unreal," said her father, James Bourage.  "You hear about it, but I just don't believe it."

James Bourage said his daughter is in a coma while doctors work to lower her body temperature and stabilize her blood pressure.

"It kept going up, then it would drop down and go up and drop down," Bourage said.

Tierney Bourage is an honor student and athlete who planned to study medicine at college.  She is now relying on medicine to save her, and her family is relying on an entire community for prayer.

"That's why we are sending this message out," James Bourage said.  "Stand with us and pray and know that her healing is on the way."

Lightning fatalities are considered rare, with somewhere between 40 and 60 a year nationwide.  According to the National Weather Service, lightning typically kills more people than hurricanes and tornadoes annually.

The Bourage family asked those who want to pray for Tierney to use specific scriptures.  For more information, click the links below:
