MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis couple suffering through this summer's heat without air conditioning received an AC unit earlier this week, and received an even bigger surprise on Thursday.
Wesley and Yahnora Harris had a lot to smile about Thursday, and said it was all thanks to the help of Memphian Jessie Hearns, and their faith in God.
Monday, Hearns gave the couple two new air conditioning units. Before receiving the gift, they spent much of the summer trying to stay cool using only fans inside their very hot home.
"It was like an oven in that house," Yahnora said. "It's just a blessing to have those air conditioners."
Hearns said something had to be done.
"The home was not livable at all," he said. "When I installed the air conditioners, I almost cried."
According to Hearns, Wesley and Yahnora depend on social security, and could not afford a working air conditioner. Since our story first aired, Hearns has been collecting monetary donations at his restaurant for the Harris family - something that was a complete surprise to the couple.
Thursday, Hearns told the couple that he now has even bigger plans for them. He plans to help them fix up their home, where the couple lives and operates a small church.
"I would like to get some carpet laid," Hearns said. "If there's anyone out there that does carpet please come forward. I need some painters. The house needs to be painted."
For Wesley and Yahnora Harris, help could not have come at a better time.
"We just thank him for the house and all the good work," Yahnora said. "All the help people have done and Channel 5 has blessed us."
Hearns said he was still challenging other business owners to step up and help. If you would like to help the Harris family, you can drop off a donation at Jessie B's BBQ and Soul Food on Mt. Moriah, or you can call 901) 362-8118.
