MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Hundreds of fans gathering for the 21st Annual Southern Heritage Classic christened the new Tiger Lane tailgating area Saturday.

The games outside Liberty Bowl Stadium were more than enough for many Southern Heritage Classic tailgaters.

"I love being here because we had barbecue," said Laila Rogers.

"This is a great event for families to get together," said Beverly Jackson.  "We're just enjoying ourselves."

For some, tailgating was the main attraction.

"We're not going to the game," said Henry McClain.  "We just come for the tailgating."

Jackson gave the new Tiger Lane two thumbs up.

"Tiger Lane is beautiful," she said.

Thanks to the outlets along the lane, music blared from many tailgating spaces.  Some put up satellites, and others plugged in Weather Plus to track the rain.

"The rain just makes it better," said Jackson.

Tents and umbrellas came in handy as rain kept tailgaters off the newly sodded Great Lawn, conveniently packed with sand to prevent mud.

Some took in a game of cornhole, while others played their own game of football.

In the end, it was all about the barbecue.

"We're going to be here until they put us out," said McClain.

Midtown traffic could be tight when the game ends around 10 Saturday night.  Around that time, drivers may want to avoid the roads around the Liberty Bowl perimeter.
