If you've watched Action News 5 this week, chances are good that you've seen our stories about Memphis City Schools using security personnel as chauffeurs for two of the district's top executives.

In a statement released by the school district, the drivers are described as "available, on-duty security personnel who are not engaged in conflicting assignments." That's a fancy way of saying that while they're busy working as chauffeurs they're not able to provide security for students or do the real jobs that they were hired for.

I'm sure School Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash has some rationale as to why this chauffeur service is good for Memphis City School students, but I'm just as certain that most taxpayers would never agree with him.

This is a public school system with many struggling students. It's also a school system that has major security issues. My suggestion here is simple. Let's put these security people back on security duty. When Memphis City Schools no longer have security problems, then we can talk about the alleged need for an executive chauffeur service.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
