I certainly understand why officials at the University of Mississippi wanted to retire the school's Colonel Reb mascot, but it seems the chore is one that's easier said than done.
Of course, there are many Ole Miss Rebels who will never embrace another mascot, but even those who are open to change are having a hard time loving the finalists that the University picked. The Colonel Reb replacement candidates are the Rebel Land Shark, the Rebel Black Bear and Hotty Toddy.
Unscientific polls about the new mascot are being conducted now by Action News 5 and the Commercial Appeal. The early results on both polls show "None of the Above" strongly ahead of the school's choices.
In sports, you don't get a lot of do-overs, but in this case, the University and its sports fans might want to consider that possibility.
