HENNING, TN -

HENNING, TN (WMC-TV) - Two gunmen opened fire Monday at the post office in Henning, killing two workers during what a survivor and authorities described as an attempted robbery.

The shooting happened around 9:00 a.m Monday inside the post office, the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said.

The post office, which sits between a self-service car wash and a coin-operated laundry, often has residents coming in to pick up their mail.

Investigators were unclear as to the motive behind the shooting, though it was described by some as an attempted robbery.

"How is any good going to come out of this? Because there ain't no money in no post office or whatever. I don't know what was the reason it happened," said Bobbie Fayne, whose niece, Paula Robinson, was killed.

Late Monday morning, state and federal investigators were searching for what was believed to be two suspects who left the scene in a maroon Chevy Malibu.  Later, they backed off that description.

District Attorney Mike Dunavant said the case involved "disturbing violence" but did not elaborate.

"We will determine who's responsible for this violence and bring those people to justice," District Attorney General Mike Dunavant said.

The United States Postal Service announced a $25,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspects.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those families," Postal Service Berth Barnett said.

But Fayne said nothing would ease her grief.

"What I want, I can't have 'cause she dead now," Fayne said.

After the shooting, nearby Ripley Primary School went on lockdown. The lockdown was lifted around 11:00 a.m.

Henning is located approximately 50 miles northeast of Memphis.
