Bill and Melinda Gates visited Hamilton High School Wednesday to talk about the grant their foundation awarded last year to Memphis City Schools.More >>
Bill and Melinda Gates came this week to check out their investment in Memphis City Schools. As you know, a year ago, the Gates generously donated $90 million to help Memphis public education. The grant has already helped Memphis City Schools hire better and more experienced teachers for many classrooms.
The Gates are hoping that the grant will help not just Memphis, but schools everywhere as they study teaching here to determine what make a great teacher.
It's amazing how even decades later we remember our best teachers and hard to imagine where we'd be if we never crossed paths with a talented instructor. I'm sure that many people who have worked with Bill Gates over the years consider him to be a great teacher.
In any event, he offered this bit of wisdom for the MidSouth yesterday. Gates said, "If you want the economy of Memphis to be strong, the best way to make that happen is to improve these high schools." Let's thank the Gates for putting their money where our problem is.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 800-465-1210.
