MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Thanksgiving is just one week away, but as of Tuesday, the Mid-South Food bank hadn't received any turkeys to feed the hungry.
Wednesday members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity answered the Food Bank's cry for help, showing up to deliver 40 turkeys.
"People are homeless, hungry, and we're just doing our part to make sure that they get what they need," the fraternity's Jeremiah Watson said.
According to the Food Bank's Susan Sanford, the need is great for the 250 organizations in Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas that count on the agency.
"We don't serve individuals, we serve agencies," she said. "The largest percentage of them are emergency food pantries, where you would want to give the family a turkey, but many of them are on site agencies that cook the turkeys for the people who are staying there."
In the past, the Food Bank had hundreds of turkeys by now. But this year, things have changed due to a troubled economy.
"People aren't spending money on dollar-per-pound turkeys to donate to the Food Bank, and there's actually now a shortage of turkeys in our area," she said.
That's why Watson and his group are stepping up, and are urging other local organizations and businesses to do the same.
"Just because we're in a bad economy, that doesn't mean you have to focus on just yourself and trying to help you and your family," he said. "There's still needy people - people without jobs."
Wednesday afternoon, the Peabody Hotel announced plans to donate 40 to 80 turkeys. The Mid-South Food Bank needs 5,000 turkeys to get through the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday.
You can also donate food during the Action News 5 Holiday Drive Wednesday December 8th. You'll hear more about the food drive and the six drop-off locations in the coming weeks.
