TIPPAH COUNTY, MS (WMC-TV) - Hundreds of people paid their respects Wednesday to Deputy Dewayne Crenshaw, a Tippah County sheriff's deputy killed in the line of duty late last week.
Led in by bikes, followed by a winding procession and escorted by fellow public servants, Crenshaw's flag-draped coffin entered a morning-long tribute to his life.
"He was definitely a man of honor. Willing to die for what he believed in," pastor Calvin Price said. "Mr. DeWayne Crenshaw was a man who lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed life and he had many adventures in his life."
Early Friday morning, Crenshaw was shot and killed in the line of duty.
"Mr. Crenshaw was a small man in stature, with a big heart," Tippah County Sheriff Karl Gillard said. "I can only hope that I have half the courage this man had."
Friends and co-workers said Crenshaw never backed down, and was prompt, thorough and professional.
"DeWayne did what was right," former sheriff Brandon Vance said. "He did his best. He maintained a high moral standard and he cared about others."
Friends called Crenshaw a hero.
"He was a great man - unselfish and fearless," Tim Wilbanks said. "A man who stood very tall with humility. He had a servant's heart."
Crenshaw was buried with full military honors.
The man accused of killing him, Franklin Fitzpatrick, is in jail on capital murder charges.
