MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Judge Lee Coffee made a lot of Mid-South residents happy this week when he set the bond for a violent crime suspect at $100 million.
At the time, the judge said that he wanted to make sure that if the man's family won the lottery, he still wouldn't get out on bond. The suspect, who is just 18 years old, is accused of attempted second-degree murder, carjacking and three other felonies. Last year, he was charged with robbing three people at gunpoint and threatening to blow their brains out.
The prosecutor in the case pointed out that the judge was simply trying to prevent this individual from killing someone. Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin made the same point this week in an interview with Action News 5's Ursula Madden. Godwin said this year's drop in the city's murder rate is partly due to his department getting people off the street after they committed an aggravated assault, before they were able to commit a murder.
The incarceration of so many young people in our community is a tragedy, but you can sure understand why Judge Coffee thought the $100 million bond was fair.
